Jesus and his disciples passed through a farmyard. Grain had been tossed upon the ground, where several hens were feeding. One of them was accompanied by day old chicks.
“You see,” he said, “the grain is new to them. They will soon learn to take their fill. This is how you take in the words I give you. Hesitantly at first, then in fullness. Still, there is something more than words.”
“What is it?” Mathew asked.
“You must know the spirit.”
“But how?” Mathew frowned. He didn’t like enigmatic answers. Jesus was always full of them.
Jesus laughed so heartily, the other disciples joined in. But in their hearts they too were questioning.
“Do you now feel a lightness of heart?” Jesus asked.
“Sometimes when you laugh,” one of them answered, still smiling.
“That is how the world was made,” Jesus said, “out of the lightness of our hearts.”
